Mount Sinabung erupts ashes

  • Mount Sinabung on Sumatra Island in Indonesia erupted on August 10, firing ash.
  • It was the second eruption of the volcano in as many days.
  • Mount Sinabung is one of the 120 active volcanoes in the country and it is also prone to seismic activity on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a ring of volcanoes and moving fault lines surrounding the Pacific Ocean.
  • An active volcano is that which has had at least one eruption during the past 10000 years.
  • Pacific Ring of Fire is home to around 450 volcanoes including three of world’s four most active volcanoes – Mount St. Helens in the USA, Mount Fuji in Japan and Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines. This area is also known as the circum-Pacific belt.
