- directs that sale by retail of any preparation containing the drug Hydroxychloroquine shall be in accordance with the conditions for sale of drugs specified in Schedule H1 to the Drugs & Cosmetics Rules, 1945.
- Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of drugs called antimalarials. It is used to prevent and treat acute attacks of malaria.
- It is also used to treat discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis in patients whose symptoms have not improved with other treatments.
- It does not work against certain types of malaria (chloroquine-resistant).
- It belongs to a class of medications known as disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs).
- It can reduce skin problems in lupus and prevent swelling/pain in arthritis, though it is not known exactly how the drug works.
