International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action

Context

The United Nations’ International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action is celebrated every year on the 4th of April.

  • “Mine action” refers to a range of efforts to clear landmines and explosive remnants of war and to mark and fence off dangerous areas.

About the day

  • On December 8th, 2005, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared that the 4th of April will be formally established and commemorated as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action every year.
  • It was first observed on 4 April 2006.

Theme

  • In 2022 the United Nations Mine Action Service marks the Day under the theme “Safe Ground, Safe Steps, Safe Home.” 
    • The focus of the observance is on the impressive achievements of the global mine action community, starting with the work of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL).
  • The theme of the Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action 2021 was “perseverance, partnership, progress”.

Mining in India

  • India produces over 85 minerals including coal, lignite, bauxite, chromite, copper ore and concentrates, iron ore, lead and zinc concentrates, manganese ore, silver, diamond, limestone, phosphorite etc.
  • India is the second-largest producer and importer of coal in the world.
  • The Metals and Mining sector in India is expected to witness a major reform in the next few years, owing to reforms such as Make in India Campaign, Smart Cities, Rural Electrification, and a focus on building renewable energy projects under the National Electricity Policy as well as the rise in infrastructure development.
