Supreme Court rules private labs to make COVID-19 tests free of cost

- Supreme Court in an interim order directed the Centre to ensure that all approved diagnostic laboratories, including private, offer free Covid-19 testing.
- The top court in its interim order said the government should immediately issue directions for carrying out free Covid-19 tests in the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories accredited labs or any agencies approved by the World Health Organisation or the Indian Council of Medical Research.
- The Supreme Court of India and all high courts are authorized to adopt measures required to ensure the robust functioning of the judicial system through the use of video conferencing technologies”, the court stated in its order passed under Article 142 of the Constitution.
- Article 142 of the Constitution empowers the top court to pass orders to do complete justice in cases before it.
