China has taken over as president of the UN Security Council for the month of March 2020, pledging to promote solidarity and cooperation in this capacity.
The Security Council was established by the UN Charter. Its primary responsibility is to work to maintain international peace and security.
The council has 15 members: the five permanent members (United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France and China) and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.
The council's presidency is a capacity that rotates every month among its 15 members.
Vietnam held the Presidency in January 2020, followed by Belgium in February 2020. After China, the Presidency of the UNSC will go to Dominican Republic in April 2020.

The UNSC was formed in 1945 and held its first session on January 17, 1946. It was created after the Second World War to address the failure of the previous international organization, the League of Nations to maintain world peace.
