World Telecommunication Day

  • World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated annually on 17 May since 1969, marking the founding of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865.
  • It was instituted by the Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos in 1973.
  • Theme: "Connect 2030: ICTs for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?".
  • The theme will focus on specific ICT-enabled solutions and emerging trends for fostering economic, environmental and social sustainability.
  • The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognizes that the spread of information and communications technology and global interconnectedness has great potential to accelerate human progress and to bridge the digital divide.
  • The Connect 2030 Agenda is a shared global vision for the development of the telecommunication/ICT sector. Under its five strategic goals – Growth, Inclusiveness, Sustainability, Innovation and Partnership.
