FSSAI slashes limit for trans-fat levels in foods

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has slashed the amount of Trans fatty acids allowed in oils and fats to 3 percent from 5 percent.
  • According to the World Health Organisation, Trans fat, or trans-fatty acids, are unsaturated fatty acids that come from either natural or industrial sources.
  • India is committed to the elimination of industrial trans-fats in fats/oils, and in foods containing fats/oils in a phased manner.
  • Now, the trans-fat content in fats and oils has been reduced to 3 perc
  • Further reduction to 2% by 2022 is under process.

Kisan Rail

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the 100th run of Kisan Rail in Maharashtra with the objective to empower farmers of the country.
  • The first Kisan Rail train service on the Indian Railways network was launched on 7 August 2020. The train runs between Devlali in Maharashtra and Danapur in the state of Bihar.
  • The Kisan Rail consists of 10 parcel vans as well as one luggage cum brake van and operates on a weekly basis.
  • The first-ever multi-commodity train service, the Kisan Rail carries vegetables such as cauliflower, capsicum, cabbage, drumsticks, chillies, onion, etc., as well as fruits like grapes, pomegranate, banana, etc.
  • Equipped with frozen containers, the Kisan Rail train service is building a seamless national cold supply chain of meat, milk, and fish.
  • The 100th run of the Kisan Rail was flagged off from Sangola in Maharashtra to Shalimar in West Bengal virtually. 

GI tag sought for India’s costliest mushroom

  • A geographical indication (GI) tag has been sought for one of the costliest mushrooms in the world that grows in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district.
  • Also known as Morel Mushrooms or MorchellaEsculenta scientifically, these mushrooms command a huge demand despite their high price tag. It is a forest produce collected by local farmers and tribals.
  • Locally called Gucchi, the mushroom is priced at over ?20,000 a kg.
  • The mushroom grows in conifer forests across temperate regions, and the cool foothills of the Himalayas, in Himachal, Uttaranchal and Jammu & Kashmir are ideal territory for them. 

Manufactured sand (M-sand)

  • The Rajasthan government brought the much-awaited policy on manufactured sand (M-sand), giving industry status to the units producing it for construction work and reducing the dependence on bajri (riverbed sand).
  • Manufactured sand (M-Sand) is a substitute of river sand for concrete construction.
  • It is produced from hard granite stone by crushing. The crushed sand is of cubical shape with grounded edges, washed and graded to as a construction material.

Digital Payments Index by RBI

  • The five parameters based on which RBI would measure the penetration of digital payments includes payment enablers, payment infrastructure – demand-side and supply-side factors, payment performance, and consumer centricity.
  • The digital payments ecosystem is currently dominated by large technology players including Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay, and recently launched WhatsApp Payments.
  • India’s UPI payments had shot up 82 per cent in the current fiscal year’s Q2 along with a 99 per cent jump in value from the year-ago period, according to the Worldline India Digital Payments report.

Toycathon 2021

  • It is an inter-ministerial initiative brought up to challenge India’s innovative minds to conceptualize novel Toy and Games which are based on Bharatiya civilization, history, culture, mythology, ethos and aspirations of today’s generation.
  • The initiative is by Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell with support from All India Council for Technical Education, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of MSME, Ministry of Textiles and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Nanomicelles: using nanoparticles for cancer treatment

  • Researchers have created a nano micelle that can be used to deliver a drug named docetaxel, which is commonly used to treat various cancers including breast, colon and lung cancer.
  • Similar to nanoshells and nanovesicles, nano micelles are extremely small structures and have been noted as an emerging platform in targeted therapy.

India's 1st Indigenously Developed Pneumococcal Vaccine "Pneumosil"

  • The Government launched the country's first pneumococcal conjugate vaccine ''Pneumosil'' developed by Serum Institute of India in collaboration with partners like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
  • Pneumosil is similar as the paediatric pneumococcal vaccine already on the market and targets serotypes 1, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 19A, 19F and 23F, providing effective and long-lasting protection for children against pneumococcal diseases.

World's largest floating solar energy project

  • The world's largest floating 600 MW solar energy project to be constructed at Omkareshwar dam on Narmada River in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh will begin power generation by year 2022-23.
  • The estimated investment in this project stands at Rs 3,000 crore.
  • The International Finance Corporation, World Bank and Power Grid have granted in-principle consent for providing aid for the said project development.

National Atomic Timescale inaugurated 

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated National Atomic Timescale and Bhartiya Nirdeshak Dravya Pranali to the Nation and laid the Foundation Stone of National Environmental Standards Laboratory on January 4 through a video conference.
  • Prime Minister lauded India’s efforts to become self-reliant in measuring the time within the range of a nanosecond. Achieving the accuracy level of 2.8 Nano Second is a huge capability in itself. Now Indian Standard Time is matching the International Standard Time with the accuracy range of less than 3 nanoseconds.

World’s oldest cave painting discovered in Indonesia

A team of archaeologists has discovered what may be the world's oldest known cave painting dating back to more than 45,000 years.

  • The cave painting depicts a wild boar endemic to the Sulawesi island of Indonesia, where the painting was found.
  • It dates back to more than 45,000 years.
  • The painting was made using red ochre pigment.
  • These pigs have been hunted by humans for tens of thousands of years and are the most commonly depicted animal in the ice age rock art of the island.
  • The painting was found in the Leang Tedongnge cave.

UK invites India to attend G7

  • The United Kingdom has invited India to attend G7 Summit to be held in Cornwall in June 2021.
  • Britain holds the G-7's rotating presidency this year. It last hosted the group's annual meeting in 2013 at the Lough Erne Resort in Northern Ireland.
  • The proposed summit will be the first in-person G-7 summit in almost two years, as it will be held in the English region of Cornwall from June 11 to 13.
  • Modi participated in the Biarritz G7 summit in 2019 when French President Emmanuel Macron had invited India.
  • Besides India, Australia and South Korea have also been invited.

Dispute over Great Renaissance Dam

  • When complete, the Grand Renaissance Dam, which Ethiopia is building, will be Africa's biggest hydroelectric power plant.
  • Its construction began in 2011 on the Blue Nile tributary in the northern Ethiopia highlands, from where 85% of the Nile's waters flow.
  • However, the mega-dam has caused a row between Egypt and Ethiopia, with Sudan caught in between, which some fear could lead to war, and the US is now helping to mediate.
  • At the centre of the dispute are plans to fill up the mega-dam as Egypt fears the project will allow Ethiopia to control the flow of Africa's longest river.

1st bird festival at Nagi- Nakti bird sanctuaries in Bihar

  • Bihar’s first state-level bird festival ‘Kalrav’ held at the world-famous Nagi-Nakti bird sanctuaries in the Jamui district from January 15.
  • The Nagi- Nakti Bird Sanctuaries have been the home of a wide variety of indigenous species of birds and of migratory birds that turn up during the winters from places like Eurasia, Central Asia, the Arctic Circle, Russia and Northern China.

  • India ranked seventh among the countries most affected by climate change in 2019.
  • The countries and territories affected most in 2019 were Mozambique, Zimbabwe as well as the Bahamas.

AMPHEX 21 Exercise

  • The Indian Armed Forces conducted a large-scale tri-service amphibious exercise AMPHEX-21 in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • The KAVACH exercise used to defend the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is also part of AMPHEX-21.

BSF launches operation ‘SardHawa’ at Rajasthan border

  • Border Security Force (BSF) launched operation ‘SardHawa’ at the western international border of Rajasthan, under which vigil will be beefed-up to check the instances of infilteration due to the dense fog in the area.

  • AvadhShilpgram in Lucknow organized the 24th “HunarHaat” of Indigenous Products of Artisans and Craftsmen.
  • The theme of the 24th "HunarHaat" organized by the Ministry of Minority Affairs is “Vocal for Local”.

Desert Knight 21

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) kickstarted the first major international wargames involving its Rafale fighter jets in Jodhpur with their French counterparts. The French are participating with Rafale, Airbus A-330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT), A-400M Tactical Transport aircraft and approximately 175 personnel.
  • The four-day joint air drill between India and France started on 20 January 2021at the Air Force Station Jodhpur and ended on 24 January 2021 and is called Desert Knight-21.
  • At present, the French detachment for Ex Desert Knight-21 is deployed in Asia as part of their SKYROS Deployment.

World Economic Forum's Davos Dialogue

  • Prime Minister addressed the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Davos Dialogue via video conferencing on January 28.
  • The 51st World Economic Forum Annual Meeting was held on the theme “The Great Reset” representing a commitment to jointly and urgently build the foundations of the global economic and social system for a more fair, sustainable and resilient future.
  • The Meeting was organized in a “twin” format, being both in-person and virtual, connecting key global governmental and business leaders in Davos with a global multi-stakeholder network in 400 cities around the world for a forward-oriented dialogue driven by the younger generation.
  • The Great Reset is an initiative by the World Economic Forum. It has been conceptualised by the founder and executive chairman of the WEF, Klaus Schwab, and has evolved over the last few years. It is based on the assessment that the world economy is in deep trouble.

India Innovation Index 2020

  • NITI Aayog launched the second edition of "India Innovation Index 2020". The Indian Innovation Index 2020 seeks to rank States and Union Territories.The first edition of the India Innovation Index was released in 2019.
  • Karnataka retained its top position in the major States category.
  • Four southern states – Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Kerala —occupy the top positions on the index, apart from Maharashtra which ranked second.
  • Bottom States: Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Bihar scored the lowest on the index, which put them at the bottom in the “major States” category.

  • The tableau of Uttar Pradesh, which was based on the theme ‘Ayodhya: Cultural Heritage of Uttar Pradesh’, was adjudged the best among the 32 tableaux that participated in the Republic Day Parade this year.
  • The tableau of Tripura was the first runner-up followed by Uttarakhand’s.
