Verb    à   GET (1st PART)

 

Get  + across (preposition &adverb)

Meaning - To communicate an idea successfully

Usage - The trainers get across the topic to the students before the exam.

 

  1. Get + along (preposition &adverb) / Get + along (preposition & adverb)  + with(preposition)

Meaning –

To have friendly relationship with someone

Usage - Dipak and I get along really well, but I don’t get along with Supriya at all.

 

To deal with a situation

Usage - I’ve been getting along really well in my new job.

 

 

  1. Get + around (preposition &adverb)

Meaning –

To travel to many places

Usage - I’ve been to France, Australia and Mexico this year. I get around!

 

To become known or to circulate information

Usage - World got around that he was leaving the company.

 

To avoid something difficult

Usage - Is there any way of getting around the rules so that we can bring our luggage into the country?

 

To find the time to do something (used with ‘to’)

Usage - I’ll get around to (doing) the washing up once I’ve finished my dinner.

  

 

  1. Get + at (preposition)

Meaning –

To criticize someone frequently, To annoy or irritate someone

Usage - She keeps getting at me for every little thing. I can’t do anything right!

 

To reach something successfully, gain access

Usage - The kids can’t get at the sweets because I’ve hidden them.

 

To suggest, mean

Usage - When you mentioned “local problems”, what exactly were you getting at?

 

 

 

  1. Get + away (adverb)

Meaning -

To leave or escape from someone or something.

Usage - Get away from me.

 

To go somewhere to have a rest or holiday

Usage - It’ll be nice to get away! Work has been so stressful this month.

 

 

 6. Get + away (adverb) + with (preposition)

Meaning –

To avoid getting caught for something you weren’t meant to do

Usage -got away with sitting in the reserved seats at the cinema!

 

To do something successfully even though it may not be the best choice or way

Usage:- I think we could get away with just gluing the wood together rather than nailing it in place.

 

 7. Get + by (preposition)

Meaning -  

To manage something with difficulty, to make ends meet

Usage - Some poor families manage to get by on just 1000Rs a day.

 

To succeed with the minimum effort

Usage - He hasn’t revised for his exams at all, but he’s clever enough to get by.

 

To move past something or someone

Usage - Excuse me, could you please move your bag so I can get by?

 

  

  1. Get + Down (adverb)

Meaning –

To feel depressed or unhappy

Usage - The political situation at the moment is really getting me down.

 

To party, sometimes dance

Usage - You guys were really getting down last night!

 

To swallow food

Usage - I know you don’t like eating vegetables, but you need to get them down.
