  1. Put + across (preposition & adverb)

Meaning - To explain an idea clearly

Usage - Mr Narendra Modi put across his decision on demonetization to the opposition.

 

 

  1. Put + aside (adverb)

Meaning - keep something for later, ignore temporarily

Usage - You really should put some money aside for your retirement.

               Please put our personal grudges aside while coming to the office.

 

 

  1. Put + away (adverb)

Meaning -

a.) keep something to its usual place

Usage - Tell the kids to put their toys away before bedtime.

 

b.) Send to prison or a mental hospital

Usage - If you commit a serious crime and get caught, you could be put away for life.

 

c.) Save money

Usage - You should consider putting some money away for your future each month.

 

d.) Consume food or drink quickly or in large quantities (informal)

Usage - I went to the party with Nitin last night. He can really put his beer away.

 

e.) Score a goal (informal)

Usage - Ronaldo skinned the keeper and put it away in the 91st minute.

 

 

  1. Put + back (adverb)

Meaning -

a.) Postpone

Usage - Tell Mr Anand that the meeting has been put back until next week.

 

b.) Return something to its original location

Usage - When I finished reading, I put the book back in the drawer.

 

  1. Put + by (preposition)

Meaning -Save money

Usage - I try to put INR 500 by each week to give to charity.

Note - Put aside, Put by and Put away –these three phrasal verbs can be used for single meaning – to save money

Meaning –

a.) Insult, humiliate, criticize

Usage - He never liked her aunt because she always put her down.

 

b.) Kill an animal or pet because it is old or ill

Usage - The poor dog had to be put down because it couldn’t walk anymore.

 

c.) Suppress, stop with force

Usage - Armed police have put down another riot in J&K.

 

d.) Write down, make a note of

Usage - Let’s put some ideas down on paper before we start the meeting.

 

e.) Make a down payment

Usage - Dharmendra have put down INR 500000 on his car.

 

f.) Put a baby to bed

Usage - Can you put little Shakshya down tonight?’

Meaning –

a.) Suggest an idea, opinion or candidate

b.) Change the time on a clock to a later time

Usage - The school children put the clock forward so that the lesson would finish earlier.
