1. Take exception

Meaning – To strongly disagree with or take offense at something

Usage – If you're in his favor, then yes, I take exception.

 

2. Hail from

Meaning – To originate from a particular place

Usage – I hail from the Midwest. Where are you from?

 

3. Put an end to

Meaning – To stop, cease, or conclude something

Usage – I'm going to put an end to the corruption in this department once and for all!

 

4. By fits and starts

Meaning – In short, inconsistent, and irregular intervals, as of motion or progress

Usage – The car was almost completely broken down, but, by fits and starts, we were able to get it to a mechanic.

 

5. Bad blood

Meaning – Tension and disdain between two or more people due to past disagreement or transgressions

Usage – There's bad blood between Sanaya and Ritu, so don't leave them alone together.

 

6. Turn up

Meaning – To appear unexpectedly or randomly

Usage – That missing document turned up on my desk while I was in a meeting, so I don't know who found it.

 

7. Die-hard

Meaning – To be difficult to stop or end

Usage – Old habits die hard, so I'm not surprised that you've struggled to stop smoking.

Meaning – Reject

Usage – The bosses turned me down for a promotion.

 

9. Pass away

Meaning – Die

Usage – My grandfather passed away this morning.

Meaning – To wield importance or influence

Usage – Without research to support these claims, I'm afraid they don't carry much weight.

 

11. Fall flat

Meaning – To fail or be ineffective/ to fail to be humorous, as of a joke

Usage – I didn’t think the comedian was funny at all — most of his jokes fell completely flat.

 

12. Under (one’s) thumb

Meaning – Under another's authoritarian control; continually forced to submit to another's will.

Usage – Although the job paid well, I couldn't stand the way I was under the boss's thumb.

 

13. Get wind of (something)

Meaning – To become aware of something, especially something being kept a secret, through indirect means

Usage – If the press gets wind of this, the campaign will be over.

 

14. Part and parcel

Meaning – An essential or fundamental part or aspect (of something)

Usage – Dealing with tantrums is part and parcel of raising a toddler.

 

15. Give vent to

Meaning – To passionately express one's negative emotions, such as anger, frustration, etc.

Usage – I work in customer service, so I'm used to people giving full vent to their frustration.
