Verb → Ask

 

  1. Ask after

Meaning - Enquire about someone’s health, how life is going.

Example - Halley always asks after you in her letters.

 

  1. Ask around

Meaning - Enquire of different people about something

Example - I don't know the answer, but maybe someone else does - I'll ask around.

 

  1. Ask for

Meaning - Request

Example - Mary asked her father for money to go for an outing with her friends.

  1. Ask in
    Meaning - Invite someone to enter one’s house

Example - We stopped our friends in the hallway and asked them in.

 

  1. Ask out

Meaning - Invite somebody, especially on a date

Example – Finally, after so many counsellings, he asked her out.

 

  1. Ask over

Meaning -  Invite them to come from their house to your house

Example -  I already asked Kelly over tonight—do you want to come too?



Verb → Back

 

  1. Back down

Meaning - Take a less aggressive position in a conflict than one previously has or has planned to

Example - She backed down on her demands.

                   In the end, she backed down.

 

  1. Back into

Meaning - Rely upon another team’s loss in order to advance to the post-season

Example -  I'm sorry, I didn't mean to back into you.

 

  1. Back off
    1. Meaning - Move backward away from something

Example - Back off that other runner so you don't collide with her.

 

  1. Meaning - Become less aggressive, particularly when one had appeared/ committed to act

Example -  The angry dogs were barking at the poor kid, so I waved a stick and backed them off.

 

  1. Back onto

 

  1. Meaning - Reverse a vehicle onto something

Example - Using hand signals, the mechanic helped the driver back the car onto the ramp.

 

  1. Meaning - Overlook something from the rear

Example - Did I really back onto the lawn? Whoops!

 

  1. Back out

 

  1. Meaning - Withdraw from something one has agreed to do

Example - She was considered a strong contender to win the local election, but she backed out at the last minute and continued working as the CEO of her company.

 

  1. Meaning - Undo a change

Example - We picked up the heavy sofa and slowly backed it out of the living room and onto the porch.

 

  1. Back up

 

  1. Meaning - To move backward

Example - If you back up a little, then your car will be completely in that parking space.

 

  1. Meaning - To save copies of computer files in another place, in case the original files become inaccessible.

Example - If you didn't back up your files before the computer crashed, they might have been lost forever.

 

  1. Meaning - To become clogged and impassable.

Example - I'm calling the plumber right now because the toilet is backed up again.

 

  1. Meaning - To support or assist someone

Example - You didn't see that meeting on the calendar, either? OK, please back me up on this, so the boss doesn't think I'm an idiot.

                                     

  1. Meaning - An alternate to be used if it becomes necessary for some reason, typically the failure, ineffectiveness, or the absence of the original.

Example - I brought an extra pen as a backup, in case this one runs out of ink during the exam.

Example - She's auditioning backup dancers for her world tour today.



Verb → Beat

 

  1. Beat down

Meaning - Strike with great force.

Example - They approached the crumbling wall and beat it down with their bare hands.

 

  1. Beat off

Meaning - To send away; to force to retreat

Example - Because their house is in such a great location, they have been beating off a lot of interested buyers.

 

  1. Beat out
    1. Meaning - To outperform or beat someone in order to win or achieve something.

Example - You beat out a lot of very qualified candidates for this internship.

 

  1. Meaning - To strike the keys of a piano to play a song.

Example - Whenever my neighbor is beating out something on his piano, you can hear it all the way down the street.

 

  1. Meaning - To strike a keyboard in order to type something.

Example - You better beat that essay out fast because the class starts in an hour.
