Phrasal Verbs

 

Verb → ACT

 

  1. Acton 

Meaning - To take action because of something like information received.

Example - The CBI were ACTING ON a tip from an informer and caught the goons red-handed.

 

  1. Act out 

Meaning - Perform something with actions and gestures.
Example - The Drama Group ACTED OUT the story on stage.

 

  1. Act up 

Meaning - Behave badly or strangely.
Example - My laptop's ACTING UP; I think I might have a virus from an unauthorized website.



Verb →  ADD 

 

  1. Add on 

Meaning - Include in a calculation.

Example - You have to ADD the VAT ON to the price of the bottle they give.

 

  1. Add up 

Meaning - To make a mathematical total.
Example - We ADDED UP the hotel bill to check it was correct.

 

Verb → AGREE

 

  1. Agree with 

Meaning - to think that something is the right thing to do.

Example - I don’t AGREE WITH corporal punishment in schools.

 

Verb → Aim

 

  1. Aim at 

Meaning - To target.

Example - The daily magazine is AIMED AT teenagers who started their career recently.

 

Verb → Allow

 

  1. Allow for 

Meaning - Include something in a plan or calculation.

Example - You should ALLOW FOR delays when planning an international vacation.

 

  1. Allow of 

Meaning - Make possible, permit.

Example - The school rules don’t ALLOW OF any exceptions.

 

Verb → Angle 

 

  1. Angle for

Meaning - Try to get something indirectly, by hinting or suggesting.

Example - She’s been ANGLING FOR an invitation, but I don’t want him to come

 

Verb → Answer

 

  1. Answer back

Meaning - To reply rudely to someone in authority.

Example - His mother was shocked when he started ANSWERING her BACK and refusing to help in daily chaos.

 

Verb → Argue

 

  1. Argue down

a.) Meaning - Beat someone in a debate, discussion or argument.

Example - The lecturer tried to ARGUE the boy DOWN, but he couldn’t.

 

b.) Meaning - Persuade someone to drop the price of something they’re selling.
Example - Sneha ARGUED him DOWN twenty percent.

 

  1. Argue out 

Meaning - Argue about a problem to find a solution.

Example - If we can’t ARGUE our differences OUT, we’ll have to take them to court.

 

Verb → Bash

 

  1. Bash about

Meaning - Mistreat physically. 

Example - If you BASH your CPU ABOUT like that, it won’t last long.

 

  1. Bash in

Meaning - Break, damage or injure by hitting.

Example - The goons BASHED the door IN to enter the house.

 

  1. Bash out 

Meaning - Write something quickly without much preparation.
Example - I BASHED the speech OUT the night before I had to hand it in.
