Mains Exam Syllabus

  • Paper I comprises of Hindi (150 marks), English (20 marks: Comprehension, translations, and common errors) and Essay writing (130 marks: Section A 55 marks:- Social Structure, History, Culture and Art of Uttarakhand, Economic and Geographical Scenario and Environment of Uttarakhand, Literature of Uttarakhand, and Women Empowerment in Uttarakhand: Challenges and Prospects, Section B 75 marks: Indian Economy and Polity System, Science and Technology, Disaster and Public Health Management, Current Events, Global Security, Human Rights and India)
  • Paper-II includes Indian History, Culture, and National Movement: Ancient, Medieval and Modern History of India (it includes till Independence), foreign policy (panchsheel, Indo China war and Indo Pak war, NAM, SAARC), History and Culture of Jharkhand, British Rule in Uttarakhand, Popular Movements of Uttarakhand)
  • Paper III: Constitutional Framework of Indian Polity, Administrative System in India, Panchayati Raj, Public Management in India, Employment and Development, Education, Health, Social Welfare, and Social Legislation, International Relation, International and Regional Organisation). It also includes Uttarakhand State: Political, Social and Administrative Context, Current Events. 
  • Paper IV: India and World Geography, Environmental Degradation and Conservation, Geography of Uttarakhand. 
  • Paper V: Economic and social development, Indian Agriculture and Industry, Planning and Foreign Trade, Public Finance and Monetary System, Economy of Uttarakhand. 
  • Paper VI: General Science and Technology: Physical and Chemical Science, Space Technology, Life Science, Computer, Information and Communication Technology and Cyber Security, Environmental Problems and Disaster Management 
  • Paper VII: General Aptitude and Ethics

2016 Mains Exam Analysis

  • Paper-II: History of India, National Movement, society and culture: Part 1: 15 Q (20 words): 2 marks each: touh Qs like Balisadhak, kumaramatya, bhaskaracharya, medieval history, depth knowledge is needed, bhakti movement, late medieval period of Deccan, modern history straight Qs were asked, Uttarakhand Qs were asked in this part around 5 Qs like MANI, Thadya dance, Sirtan, Tinchari Mai, Panch Prayag. Uttarakhand GK is compulsory, Part 2: 10  Q (50 marks, 50 words) 3 Qs were from Uttarakhand GK: Peshawar incident, Garhwal painting etc, Qs were factual but were direct No critical Qs, medieval history especially Mughal history, Part 3: 7Q out of which 5 are to be done (8 marks, 26 Qs, 125 words) moderate to tough Qs, and 2Qs were Uttarakhand especially CA, part 4: 7Q but 5 are to be done (16 marks), NCERT end Qs were asked, 2 Qs were from Uttarakhand. 

Here, Uttarakhand GK: 73 marks, Ancient: 67 marks, medieval: 42 marks, modern: 66 marks

  • Paper III: Indian Polity, Social Justice and International Relations: Part I: 15 Qs: 2 marks each: 20 words: CAG, (direct Qs from Laxmikant), Uttarakhand schemes like doli scheme, Starred Question, National Green Tribunal, Judicial review, NOTA, Contingency Fund of India, Mainly Qs were based on CA, H-1B Visa, Advocate General, national development council , Part II: 10 Qs: 5 marks each: 5o words: UNO, Panchsheel, Brexit, employment schemes by Uttarakhand schemes (1 Q), Uttarakhand district planning committees, United Nations Security Council, Part III: 7 Qs out of which 5 are to be done: 8 marks each: 125 words: analytical Q on NAM (IR Qs were analytical), higher education in Uttarakhand (1Q), judicial activism, Constitutional amendment, Part IV: 7 Qs out of which 5 are to be done: 16 marks each: 250 words: majorly analytical Qs were asked in this part on the same pattern of UPSC. Q was static and syllabus oriented totally. 
  • Paper V: Economic and Social Development: 184 marks: Static economy and social development, CA: 21 marks, Uttarakhand including CA: 68 marks: More straightforward Qs with few analytical, focus on static economy and Uttarakhand economy.
