- Anti-Terrorism Day is observed across India on 21 May. The date is chosen to commemorate the death anniversary of one of the most eminent Prime Ministers of India, Shri Rajiv Gandhi.
- On May 21, 1991, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres in a suicide bombing attack at a rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Since then, the day has been declared Anti-Terrorism Day in India.
- This day is also observed to make people aware of ongoing terrorist activities and the precautions that can be taken by ordinary people to prevent these acts of terrorism.
- Rajiv Gandhi became the youngest prime minister of the country when he was sworn in at the age of 40 as the sixth Prime Minister of India after his mother Indira Gandhi's assassination in 1984.
- Anti-Terrorism Day also honours the sacrifices made by thousands of soldiers who fought against terrorism. It's a day to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in terrorist attacks.
