Context

A Bangalore based startup has received the National Award 2021 from Technology Development Board (TDB) for developing a commercial solution for conversion of CO2 to chemicals and fuels (Recycling Carbon Technology).

About the Recycling Carbon Technology

  • The technology has been initiated by the Breathe Applied Sciences, a startup incubated at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR).
    • Breathe Applied Sciences which was started by the funding from DST Nano Mission.
    • JNCASR is an autonomous institute of Department of Science and Technology.
  • It has developed efficient catalysts and methodologies for the conversion of CO2to methanol and other chemicals.
    • This has led to improvisation of process engineering to enhance the production of chemicals and fuels from anthropogenic CO2generated from various sources.
  • The developed methodology integrates multiple components involved in the CCUS (Carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration) to develop a complete solution for the environmental issues due to global warming.

Technology Development Board (TDB)

  • The Technology Development Board (TDB) was established in 1996.
  • It is a statutory body which was set up under the Technology Development Board Act, 1995.
  • It was started to promote development and commercialization of indigenous technology and adaptation of imported technology for wider application.
  • The board consists of 11 Board members.
  • The TDB is the first organization of its kind within the government framework with the sole objective of commercializing the indigenous research.
  • It introduced a new category of Award for the technology start-ups for development of promising new technology with potential for commercialization and carries a cash prize of Rs. 15 lakh and a trophy.

Some other established similar methods  of carbon recycling

  • Emission-to-Liquids (ETL) technology: It enables large scale recycling of the most abundant greenhouse gas, CO2, as raw material for liquid fuel and chemicals. It transforms CO2 emissions to synthetic fuels and materials, avoiding the use of fossil fuels.
  • Thermo-chemical process: It chemically recycles carbon molecules contained in waste into added-value products such as renewable methanol and ethanol.

Verifying, please be patient.
