Bhasha Certificate Selfie campaign

Context

Recently, the Ministry of Education has launched a campaign ‘Bhasha Certificate Selfie’ to encourage cultural diversity and promote multilingualism and foster the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.

What is Bhasha Certificate Selfie Initiative?

  • Bhasha Certificate Selfie Initiative aims to promote Bhasha mobile app by encouraging people to upload their selfies with the certificate from their social media accounts using the hashtag #BhashaCertificateSelfie.
  • The initiative aims to ensure that people acquire basic conversational skills in Indian languages. 
    • To achieve this, a target of 75 lakh people acquiring basic conversational skills has been set.

What is Bhasha Sangam mobile app?

  • It is a mobile application developed by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with MyGov India.
    • The Ministry of Education (MoE) was created on September 26, 1985, through the 174th amendment to the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961. Currently, the MoE works through two departments:
      • Department of School Education & Literacy
      • Department of Higher Education
    • It aims to foster the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat by enabling people across India to learn different languages of different states of India and come closer to their culture.
    • Using the app, people can learn 100+ sentences of daily use in as many as 22 scheduled Indian languages.

Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat

  • The initiative ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ was announced on 31st October, 2015 on the occasion of the 140th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
  • Through this innovative measure, the knowledge of the culture, traditions and practices of different states & UTs will lead to an enhanced understanding and bonding between the states, thereby strengthening the unity and integrity of India.
