As part of the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence Day celebrations, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited conducted taxi trials of Hindustan-228 aircrafs at HAL’s Kanpur facility.
About Hindustan-228 aircraft
- The Hindustan-228 aircraft is built on the existing frame of the German Dornier 228 defence transport aircraft used by the defence forces.
- HAL for launch under UDAN scheme have a maximum take-off weight of 6200 kgs has reduced to 5700 kg for the Commercial Pilot License category.
- The Hindustan-228 is a 19-seat multi-role utility aircraft built for various applications such as
- VIP transport
- passenger transport
- air ambulance
- flight inspection roles
- cloud seeding
- Recreational activities like
- para jumping
- Aerial surveillance
- photography
- Cargo applications
Why is HAL building a civil aircraft?
- Small civilian aircrafts are considered to be an essential element of the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme that the central government is attempting to put in place for regional connectivity.
UDAN SCHEME
- UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) is government's regional connectivity scheme.
- This scheme is a part of the National Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP).
- Funding: Joint funding by the GoI and the state governments.
- Duration: 10 years
- Aim: To set up 1,000 new air routes and to establish 100 new airports.
- Progress: The Civil Aviation Ministry has approved 78 new routes under the 4th round of Regional Connectivity Scheme UDAN. So far, 766 routes have been sanctioned under the UDAN scheme.
- 21st October is identified as UDAN Day.
