- The concept of World AIDS Vaccine Day is rooted in a May 18, 1997 commencement speech at Morgan State University made by then-President Bill Clinton.
- The first World AIDS Vaccine Day was observed on May 18, 1998 to commemorate the anniversary of Clinton’s speech, and the tradition continues today.
- It is also an opportunity to educate communities about the importance of preventive HIV vaccine research.
- A safe and effective preventive HIV vaccine is key to ending the HIV pandemic.
- National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) leads this observance.
