IIT Madras tops in Atal innovation rankings

Context

According to Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA), Seven IITs and the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, are among the top 10 central institutions in promotion and support of innovation and entrepreneurship development.

Key-highlights of the ranking

  • The top rank has been bagged by the IIT, Madras followed by the IITs in Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur and Roorkee.
    • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has been recognised as the Most Innovative Educational Institute in India for the third consecutive year in the ARIIA.
    • IIT Madras is in the CFTIs (Centrally Funded Technical Institutions)/Central University/Institute of National Importance (Technical) category.  
    • 1,438 higher education institutions (HEIs) (including all IITs, NITs, and IISc, among others) participated in the third edition of ARIIA rankings as compared to 674 HEIs during last year. 
  • The IISc has bagged the sixth position in the ranking.

ARIIA Ranking 2021 - Categories

  • The ARIIA Ranking 2021 will be awarded in 9 different categories. These would include the following-
    • Centrally funded technical institutions ( IITs, NITs, etc)
    • State universities
    • State standalone technical colleges
    • Private universities
    • Private standalone technical colleges
    • Non-technical government
    • Private universities and institutions.

ARIIA Rankings

  • ARIIA Rankings lists top universities and colleges in India on parameters of innovation such as patent filing and registered students and faculty start-ups.
  • The rankings also recognize efforts put in institutions to fund generation by incubated startups, specialised infrastructure created by institutions to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, etc.

Atal Rankings of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) 

  • It is an initiative of the Ministry of Education, Government of India to systematically rank all the major higher educational institutions and universities in India on indicators related to “Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development” amongst students and faculties.
  • More than quantity, ARIIA focuses on quality of innovations and tries to measure the real impact created by these innovations nationally and internationally.
  • Implemented by: AICTE and Ministry’s Innovation Cell
  • Aim: To systematically rank higher education institutions and universities in India on indicators related to Innovation, Start-up and Entrepreneurship Development amongst students and faculty.
  • Parameters evaluated: 
    • Patent filed and granted 
    • Number of registered students and faculty start-ups
    • Fund generation by incubated start-ups
    • Specialised infrastructure created by institutions to promote innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Rank Categorisation
    • Two broad categories-
      • publicly funded institutions
      • private or self-financed institutions
    • The publicly funded institutions have been further categorized into:
      • Institute of National Importance, Central Universities & Central Funded Technical Institutes.
      • State University & Deemed Universities (Government & Government Aided)
      • Government and Government / Aided College/Institutes
    • The private or self-financed institutions have been categorized further into:
      • private or self-financed universities
      • private or self-financed college/institutes
    • A 6th sub- category for higher educational institutions for women has been introduced in 2020 to encourage women and bringing gender parity in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship.
