Indian Navy Day 2021

Context

In India, December 4 is observed as the National Navy Day every year, to celebrate the achievements and role of the naval force in the country. 

  • The theme of Indian Navy Day 2021 is ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh’ signifying 50 years of India’s victory in the Indo-Pakistan war that took place in 1971.

Historical background of the day

  • On December 3, 1971, Pakistan attacked Indian Air bases. In response to the attack the Indian Defence Force launched Operation Trident on December 4.
    • Three high speed missile boats namely Nirghat, Nipat, Veer were dispatched towards the Karachi port.
  • During the attack Indian Navy ravaged the fuel Storage tankers at Pakistan Naval headquarters located in Karachi. 
    • The Indian Navy also sinked 4 of the Pakistani boats and killed 500 Pakistani Naval personnel. This included minesweepers and destroyed us as well.
    • It was a devastating attack on the Pakistan Naval Headquarters of Karachi. 
  • For the first time India deployed an anti-ship missile during the India Pakistan war of 1971. The Operation Trident was followed by Operation Python.

The Indian Navy’s anti-ship cruise missile BrahMos is the world’s fastest operational system in its class.

Therefore, to celebrate the success and achievements of the Indian navy force, every year Navy day is celebrated.

Operation python

  • After the first attack during operation Trident, the Pakistan Navy attempted to outsmart the Indian Navy by mingling with merchant ships. 
  • The operation Python was launched to counter this move of the Pakistan Navy.

  • The Indian Navy (Originally called the Royal Indian Navy) was established in 1612 by the East India Company.
  • The Indian Navy is presently the seventh strongest maritime force on the planet, with only the United States, Russia, China, Japan, United Kingdom and France ahead of it. 
  • The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) exercises operational and administrative control of the Indian Navy from the Integrated Headquarters of Ministry of Defence (Navy).
    • He is assisted by the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) and three other Principal Staff Officers, namely the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (DCNS), the Chief of Personnel (COP) and the Chief of Material (COM).
