In a latest development, PM Modi inaugurated MaitriSetu Bridge between India and Bangladesh.

About the MaitriSetu Bridge

  • The MaitriSetu Bridge has been constructed upon Feniriver which flows between sabroom in Tripura and ramgarh in Bangladesh.
  • The bridge is 1.9 km long and with a project cost of 133 crore.
  • The name MaitriSetu symbolizes growing bilateral relation between India and Bangladesh.
  • The construction was taken up by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd.

Significance of MaitriSetu Bridge

  • Better connectivity: It is poised to herald a new chapter for trade and people to people movement between India and Bangladesh.
  • Gateway of northeast: With this inauguration, Tripura is set to become the ‘Gateway of North East' with access to Chittagong Port of Bangladesh, which is just 80 Kms from Sabroom in Tripura.
  • Easy access: MaitriSetu is one of the major development for the northeast to get direct access to seaport which would open a new horizon of development for southeast Asian countries.
  • Reduction in distance: Haldia sea port was only sea trade route to connect Northeast states covering distance about 600 to 1200 km. With the inauguration of MaitriSetu bridge distance would be reduced substantially from 75 km to 600 km for all northeastern states.

  • Muhuri river also called Little Feni, from NoakhaliDistrict  joins it near its mouth.
  • The river is navigable throughout the year by small boats up to Ramgarh, some 80 kilometres upstream.
