Context

Recently, the Union Minister for Power launched the Virtual Smart Grid Knowledge Centre (SGKC) and Innovation Park as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav Programme.

About Virtual Smart Grid Knowledge Centre

  • The new Virtual Smart Grid Knowledge Centre located within the POWERGRID centre in Manesar is the first of its kind initiative by the Union government and technical assistance from USAID.
  • The solutions which are physically present at SGKC premises at Manesar are also hosted on this platform.
  • This includes solutions such as Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), smart homes, microgrids, Outage Management System (OMS), etc.
  • It will enable a digital footprint of the physical setup of SGKC, the need for which was felt during COVID-19 pandemic.

About Smart Grid Knowledge Centre (SGKC)

  • The SGKC has been established by POWERGRID at Manesar for demonstration and advancement of frontier smart grid technologies with support from the Ministry of Power (MoP), Government of India (GoI) and National Smart Grid Mission (NSGM).
  • SGKC aims to be one of the leading Centres of Excellence globally to foster innovation, entrepreneurship and research in smart grid technologies and create capacities in the power distribution sector.

What is a Smart Grid?

  • A smart grid is an electrical grid with automation, communication, and information technology systems that can monitor power flows from generators to consumers (even down to the appliance level) and control or curtail the load in real-time or near real-time to match generation.
  • Smart Grids can be built by implementing efficient transmission and distribution technologies, as well as system operations, customer integration, and renewable energy integration.
  • Smart grid solutions aid in the real-time monitoring, measurement, and management of power flows, which can aid in the detection of losses and, as a result, the implementation of suitable technical and administrative actions to mitigate losses.

Verifying, please be patient.
