Context

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered the inaugural address at The Energy and Resources Institute’s (TERI) World Sustainable Development Summit through video conferencing.

Key-highlights of the PM’s Speech

  • The Prime Minister recalled that Environment and sustainable development have been key focus areas for him all through his 20 years in office, first in Gujarat and now at the national level.
  • The Prime Minister informed about the LED bulbs distribution scheme that has been running for over seven years, has helped save more than 220 billion units of electricity and 180 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
  • He encouraged academic and research institutes like TERI to come up with scalable solutions to realize the potential of green hydrogen.

About World Sustainable Development Summit

  • The World Sustainable Development Summit is the annual event of the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).
  • The World Sustainable Development Summit included discussion over a wide range of issues including sustainable development, sustainable production, climate change, global commons, energy transitions and resource security.
  • The World Sustainable Development Summit 2022 will be held in a hybrid format in New Delhi, India.
  • It was earlier known as Delhi Sustainable Development Summit.

  • The World Sustainable Development Summit 2022 Theme is ‘Towards a Resilient Planet: Ensuring a Sustainable and Equitable Future’. 
  • The theme of the 2021 Summit was ‘Redefining our common future: Safe and secure environment for all’.

  • The World Sustainable Development Summit aims to provide long-term solutions to the global community on issues related to sustainable development. 
  • It brings various stakeholders on a single platform and initiates a step towards achieving constructive action in combating issues pertinent to the future of humanity.
    • It aims to bring together global leaders and thinkers in the fields of sustainable development, energy and environment sectors on a common platform.
    • It has been conceptualized as a single platform to accelerate action towards sustainable development and climate change.
