Context

World Theatre Day is celebrated annually on March 27, promoted by the International Theatre Institute (ITI).

History

  • The International Theatre Institute or ITI established World Theatre Day in 1961.
    • Jean Cocteau was the person who wrote the first World Theatre Day Message in 1962.
  • The proposal was supported by the Scandinavian centres of the ITI and publicized with enthusiasm.
  • Since 1962, World Theatre Day has been celebrated by ITI Centres, ITI Cooperating Members, theatre professionals, theatre organizations, theatre universities and theatre lovers all over the world on the 27th of March.
    • Since then, World Theatre Day has been celebrated every year on 27 March, the date of opening of the 1962 "Theatre of Nations" season in Paris.

Theme

  • The theme for World theatre Day 2022 is 'Theatre and a Culture of Peace' and it remains the same every year.

Objectives

  • To encourage all types of theatre around the globe.
  • To raise public awareness of the importance of theatre in all of its forms.
  • To enjoy theatre in all of its forms for its own sake.
  • To share the joy for theatre with other people.
  • Providing opportunities for theatrical communities to promote their work on a large scale, so that governments recognise and support the worth and importance of dance in all of its forms.

Significance

  • Since the Greeks, theatre has been one of the most important types of entertainment.
  • It is a fusion of several types of fine arts in which live performers, actors, or actresses present to a live audience regarding their real-life experiences in a specific location or on a stage.
  • The significance of theatrical arts, their function in the sphere of entertainment, as well as the transformations that theatre brings to life are all highlighted on this day.

Verifying, please be patient.
