Context

World Youth Skills Day is celebrated every year on July 15.

Background

  • The United Nations General Assembly declared July 15 as World Youth Skills Day in December 2014. 
  • Since the inception of World Youth Skills Day, it has facilitated interaction among young people, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, businesses, governments, and development partners.

Objectives

  • The objective was to improve socio-economic conditions for today’s youth and addressing the challenge of unemployment. 

Theme

  • The theme for this year is Transforming youth skills for the future.
  • The Theme for 2021 Reimagining Youth Skills Post-Pandemic’.
  • The sole purpose of this day is to provide essential skills to youngsters around the globe so that they can get employment. 
  • The day helps in disseminating awareness about the importance of skills in getting good work opportunities.
  • World Youth Skills Day 2022 takes place at a time when all nations are still working on socio-economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. 
    • Therefore, it can serve as a platform for the economic benefits that nations can accomplish by training the young.

Steps taken by the India to ensure youth of the nation becomes skilled

  •  Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY): Launched in 1975, the scheme aims to offer free skill training to Indian Youths.
    • Later PMKVY 3.0 was launched in the year, 2021, under which around 300 types of skill training programs were initiated by the Indian government so that, the youth of the nation get empowered.
  • National Career Service Portal: NCS portal was launched in 2015 to replace the present nationwide system of Employment Exchanges with IT-enabled Career Centres.
  • Smart: The Skill Management as well as Accreditation of Training Centres offers a single window IT application, which focuses on the accreditation, grading, affiliation and continuous monitoring of the Training Centers in the skill ecosystem.
  • Sankalp: Skill Acquisition and knowledge awareness for livelihood is started to strengthen the district level ecosystem in terms of care opportunity through convergence as well as coordination.
  • Strive: Skills strengthening for Industrial Value enhancement is a World Bank Sponsored Project of Gol in order to make ITI and apprenticeship training effective relevant.
  • PM YUVA Yojana: Pradhan Mantri Yuva UDyamita Vikas Abhiyan, launched in 2016, aim at creating the ecosystem for entrepreneurship Development by offering education as well as easy access to entrepreneurship support networks as well as promoting social enterprises for inclusive growth.
  • Kaushalacharya Award: This award is initiated by the government in order to motivate the skill trainers by reorganizing their efforts.

  • Yuva Scheme: The young upcoming as well as versatile Authors scheme was launched in the year, 2021, this was an effort to inspire the young writers under 30 years of age to write on India's Freedom movements by providing stipend and proper guidance from renowned authors of the nation.
