Yemen Peace initiative of Saudi Arabia

Context

India has supported the initiative announced by Saudi Arabia for bringing peace to Yemen.

About the peace initiative

• The initiative is taken as an effort to find a political solution to the ongoing crisis in Yemen.
• It proposes a comprehensive ceasefire in Yemen under UN supervision.
• Saudi reiterated its support against the Houthi rebels.

Yemen Crisis

• The Yemeni Crisisbegan in 2011-12 in the form of a revolution against President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who had been Yemen’s President for more than three decades.
• Later on,the government was led by Saleh's vice president, Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi,
• In 2014, the Houthi insurgency transformed into the Civil war as Houthi fighters swept in the Capital of Sanaaand forced Hadi to negotiate a "unity government" taking into some other political factions.
• The rebels continued to apply pressure as a result Hadi resigned along with his ministers in January 2015.
• Later, the Houthis declared control of government and dissolution of Parliament.
  

Saudi Arabia involvement

• In 2015, Saudi Arabia and several other countries began military operations in Yemen against Houthi rebels. Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE also supported Saudi Arabia.
• It took in the form of airstrikes blamed with civilian casualties.
• It has caused a huge level of displacement within or out of the country.
