National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) celebrated its 16th Foundation Day

Context

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Raising Day is celebrated on January 19 to mark its formation. This year, the NDRF observed its 16th NDRF Raising Day.

Significant contributions made by NDRF

  • Reduction in Loss of life: A reduced level of loss of life and property due to various disasters in the past years has been brought to a minimum level.
  • Women empowerment: NDRF also included women who were playing an important role in every disaster, shoulder to shoulder with male colleagues.
  • International Collaborations: NDRF conducted international disaster management exercises such as the SCO Joint Exercise 2019 and BIMSTEC 2020, to deal with any kind of disaster with mutual support.

Recent achievements of NDRF

  • Republic Day Tableau 2020: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) participated for the first time in the Republic Day Tableau 2020 and secured the first place.
  • First batch of women disaster combatants:Recently, the NDRF has inducted the first batch of 100 women disaster combatants and rescuers.
  • Global recognition: India could soon be a part of the United Nations (UN) mandated international disaster rescue operations as, NDRF, is expected to obtain a globally recognised standardisation later this year.

NDRF

  • NDRF is the country's federal contingency force.
  • Ministry: It functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs, within the overall command, control and leadership of the Director General, NDRF.
  • Director General: The director general of NDRF is an IPS officer. Currently, IPS officer SN Pradhan is the DG of the NDRF.
  • The Disaster Management Act has statutory provisions for constitution of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for the purpose of specialized response to natural and man-made disasters.
  • Accordingly, in 2006 NDRF was constituted with 8 Battalions.
  • At present, NDRF has a strength of 12 Battalions with each Battalion consisting of 1149 personnel.
  • In the beginning, the personnel of NDRF were deployed for routine law and order duties also. In 2008, NDRF was made a dedicated force for disaster response related duties, under the unified command of DG NDRF.
